On the formula for the patient three months after stroke
A patient comes to your clinic three months after a stroke. The hospital has done its work. The clot was caught in time. The imaging shows where the injury sits. But she has not come back. The fatigue is the kind sleep does not touch. The right hand is slower than the left. The word she wants takes a moment longer to arrive. Her family is patient, and watching.
In TCM language, this is qi xu xue yu. Qi vacuity with blood stasis. Wang Qing-Ren named the pattern in the Yi Lin Gai Cuo in 1830, and wrote a single formula for it. The same formula a Hunan research group has now read at the molecular layer in 2025.
The formula.
Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang. Supplement-the-Yang and Restore-the-Five. Wang Qing-Ren wrote it for the patient whose qi had collapsed after a wind stroke, and whose blood had stasised in the channels where the qi could no longer move it. Two hundred years of clinical use have not displaced it.
The number that matters.
The research found the classical formula brought stroke damage from 27.5 percent of a hemisphere down to 8.5 percent. The standard Western drug used as the comparison brought it to 14.9 percent. The two-hundred-year-old formula doubled the modern pharmaceutical.
Why.
After a stroke, the body fires two of its oldest alarm systems at once. One is the inflammation system, the other the clotting system. Both were built to handle injury. Neither was built to keep firing long after the injury is done. When they do, they begin to do harm of their own.
Inside the brain, this looks like the following. The inflammation alarm draws in the brain's clean-up cells. Those cells, hearing the alarm, begin to clean — and they cut connections between neurons that should have been left intact. The wall between blood and brain loosens. The damaged area continues to spread, quietly, after the clot is gone.
What the research describes is the formula turning that alarm down. The main inflammation signal fell by more than half. The cut connections grew back. The blood-brain wall mended. The harmful inflammation receded. The healing kind rose to take its place.
What this means for the patient three months after stroke.
The alarm does not switch all the way off when the hospital sends the patient home. It continues, at a lower note, for weeks. It slows the brain's own repair work. The classical use of Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang has always been those weeks and months after — not the hour of the event. The 2025 research describes the layer the formula has been working on the whole time.
A note on our preparation.
Our Neurogene is the Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang base, modified for the modern stroke patient who often carries Liver wind and lingering heat layered over the qi vacuity. We have added Tian Ma and Gou Teng for the internal wind that can persist after the event. Lian Qiao and Jin Yin Hua for the inflammatory layer the labratory work now confirms. The base formula does the qi-and-blood work Wang Qing-Ren described. The additions speak to what the modern patient brings into the room.
What I recommend.
For the post-stroke patient, two bags daily for the first month, then one bag daily for months two and three. Add daily Microgard for the gut-brain ground that the same calming pathway answers to. Re-evaluate cognitive and motor function at the three-month mark. Patiets often feel the change before they can describe it.
